Health and Safety policy

Health and Safety Policy for Bow Removal Services

This Health and Safety Policy sets out the standards and procedures followed by our removal company operating in and around Bow. Our goal is to protect employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public from injury and ill health arising from our work activities. We are committed to complying with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who ensure that adequate resources, information and supervision are provided. Managers are responsible for implementing this policy, monitoring performance and taking corrective action where needed.

Supervisors and team leaders must ensure that work is carried out safely, that staff are properly briefed, and that risk controls are followed at all times. They must report hazards and incidents promptly and support continuous improvement in safe working practices.

All employees, including temporary and agency staff, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others affected by their actions. They must follow safety procedures, use equipment correctly, report hazards and cooperate fully with training and risk assessments.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We carry out regular risk assessments for all key activities involved in removals, including packing, loading, unloading, driving, working at height when necessary, and handling bulky or fragile items. These assessments identify hazards, evaluate the level of risk and set out appropriate control measures.

Safe systems of work are developed from these assessments and are communicated to all staff. These systems cover vehicle loading methods, securing loads, use of lifting equipment, safe manual handling techniques, and procedures for working in clients' homes, business premises, storage facilities and public spaces.

Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to working practices, equipment or locations. Feedback from staff, clients and accident investigations is used to improve our controls and procedures.

Training, Information and Supervision

All staff receive appropriate health and safety induction training before starting work, including information on this policy, emergency arrangements, safe driving, manual handling, and the correct use of equipment. Additional role-specific training is provided for drivers, team leaders and anyone using specialist lifting or access equipment.

Refresher training is arranged at suitable intervals or when new risks, equipment or procedures are introduced. Supervisors are responsible for monitoring working practices and providing on-the-job guidance to ensure that training is applied correctly in day-to-day operations.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core element of removal work and is managed carefully to prevent injury. Staff are trained in safe lifting techniques, working in teams to share loads, using appropriate equipment and recognising when a load is too heavy or awkward to move safely by hand.

We provide suitable handling aids and equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, straps, ramps and protective coverings. Only trained and authorised personnel may use specialist equipment such as tail lifts or mechanical handling devices. All equipment is maintained in a safe condition and inspected at regular intervals.

Vehicles, Driving and Transport Safety

Our vehicles are maintained in line with manufacturers' recommendations and relevant regulations. Regular checks and servicing help to ensure safe and reliable operation. Drivers must carry out pre-use inspections and report any defects immediately so that they can be rectified without delay.

Drivers receive training on safe driving techniques, load security, route planning and parking safely in residential and commercial areas. Loads are secured to prevent movement during transit, and vehicles are never overloaded. Extra care is taken when operating in busy streets or confined spaces where there is a higher risk to pedestrians and other road users.

Working in Clients' Premises and Public Areas

When working in clients' homes, offices or other premises, our staff respect the property and ensure that walkways and access points are kept as clear and safe as possible. Where necessary, protective materials such as floor coverings and corner guards are used to reduce the risk of damage and trips.

When operating in shared spaces, such as entrances, corridors, stairwells and public pavements, we take steps to minimise disruption and risk to others. This may include using warning signs, barriers or spotters to guide movement of large items, and coordinating with building management where required.

Personal Protective Equipment

Suitable personal protective equipment is provided where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and other protective items appropriate to the task and environment.

Staff are responsible for using PPE as instructed, keeping it in good condition and reporting any loss or damage so that replacements can be arranged. Management ensures that PPE is suitable for the tasks undertaken and is readily available.

Accident Reporting, Investigation and First Aid

All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to a supervisor or manager. Records are kept to help identify trends and areas for improvement. Significant incidents are investigated to establish root causes and to implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

First aid provisions are maintained in vehicles and at our base of operations. Designated staff are trained in basic first aid, and clear instructions are given on how to obtain additional medical assistance when required.

Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures

Fire and emergency procedures are in place for our premises and are followed when working at clients' sites, in accordance with their local protocols. Staff receive guidance on evacuation routes, assembly points and how to raise the alarm. Vehicles are equipped with suitable fire extinguishers where required, and staff are instructed on their safe use.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

Compliance with this Health and Safety Policy is monitored through regular inspections, audits and reviews of working practices. Management consults with staff to identify potential improvements and to encourage a proactive approach to safety.

This policy is reviewed periodically to ensure it remains suitable, adequate and effective for our removal operations in Bow and surrounding areas. Updates are communicated to all employees, and training is provided where changes affect working practices.

By following this Health and Safety Policy, our removal company aims to maintain a safe and healthy working environment for everyone involved in our services.
